Tour Description

The coast of Gipuzkoa between Zarauz and Mutriku hides some of the most beautiful places in the whole Basque Country. Throughout this tour, we will visit villages such as Guetaria, Zumaia and Mutriku.

Our first stop will be the beautiful Zarauz, which was a summer resort for the aristocracy and attracted Queen Elizabeth II during the 19th century. Nowadays, its long beach and waves welcome tourists and surfers all year round.

Then we will take the coastal road to Guetaria and we will have in front of us El Raton de Guetaria, one of the icons of this seafaring town, known worldwide as the birthplace of famous people such as Juan Sebastian Elcano or Cristobal Valenciaga.

We will take a walk through its streets, its port, we will visit the church and we will be able to see some of the gothic, baroque or neoclassical houses or the grills of some of the best restaurants in the area.

Once again, we will take the road to Zumaia, where we will be able to understand a little more about the evolution of the earth, thanks to one of the most interesting geological phenomena that we will be able to find, the FLISH.

Along the 14 kms that separate Mutriku from Zumaia, geologists have been able to study the evolution of the earth over the last 120 million years. Our guide will give you all the details of the most important aspects.

Mutriku is our last stop. This fishing village, of medieval origin, still has several palaces and tower-houses of great interest. Palaces with coats of arms on their facades that show the importance that this town had in its time.

The steep, cobbled streets lead us to the port, where we can see the Brotherhood or some of the small boats.

Mutriku will be our final point in this tour and here we will start the return to your accommodatio

Tour Itinerary

We will start this tour by picking you up at your accommodation and we will approach our first stop, Zarauz. We will stop on the beach to have one of the best views of the coast. Then we will go into the town and walk along the malecón, passing in front of Karlos Argiñano’s famous restaurant until we reach the Palacio Narros, where the Queen used to spend her summer.

The second stop will be in one of the oldest villages of Guizpucoa, Guetaria. Here we will visit its old town, declared Historical Patrimony and we will stop in the Church of San Salvador built in the 14th century.

You can’t say that you have been to Guetaria and haven’t tasted the Txakol, the local star product, so we will go into one of the many places and enjoy a skewer with a glass of Txakoli.

Zumaia is our next stop. Here we approach Itxurun beach, where we can observe the FLISH phenomenon.

We will travel along part of the coast, visiting the most representative points, such as the place where geologists studied the impact of the meteorite on the Yucatan Peninsula, or the area that shows that there was global warming 55 million years ago. Our guide will give you the corresponding explanations in different places.

In this place, several movies have been shot, among which Game of Thrones or Eight Basque Surnames stand out.

In this town founded in 1209 we will get lost in its steep streets, at whose sides we will find very interesting palaces and tower houses. We can emphasize its neoclassical church, one of the few in Guipuzcoa. Its sea port, protected by large dikes from the powerful storms that hit these shores, is another of the attractions of this town.

Here we will end this day, and we will return to your accommodation.

Private guided tour with Diego
While in San Sebastian on a week long holiday we decided to visit Lourdes in France and was advised by the hotel reception that Diego' s private guided tour to Lourdes would be a good option. Diego picked us up at our hotel and from the moment we met him he was proved to be a respectful and professional guide. His English was impeccable and his knowledge of the Basque Country excellent. He engaged with us in an informal, fun and pleasant manner. In Lourdes, he showed us around all the holy and tourist sites including the Grotto, the three Basilicas and spectacular views of the Pyrenees and Lourdes from the top of the Funiculaire du Pic du Jer. Diego created one of the best experiences of our holiday and comes highly recommended.
