Embark on an unforgettable journey with us through the Baztán Valley and its surroundings! The beauty of the valleys and villages of the Basque Country takes on a new dimension in all the enchanting locations we will explore on this tour. Picturesque farmhouses with white walls, combined with reddish stone and their characteristic two-sloped roofs, emerge in a setting surrounded by lush green meadows.
Getting Started
Our journey kicks off in Sumbilla, a unique village at the entrance of the Valley, where a magnificent 16th-century bridge over the Bidasoa River divides the town into two districts, revealing its charm and historical significance. We’ll then head to Irurita, the second most populous town in the Valley, where palatial architecture and heraldic houses transport us to bygone centuries. Notable architectural gems include the Jaureguia Palace, one of the numerous “Cabo de armería” palaces and the oldest preserved in the Valley, built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Alongside it, the palace-house of the Dukes of Goyeneche stands out, one of the buildings forming the Duquesa de Goyeneche square.
Elizondo, City of Historic Nobles
Our next stop takes us to Elizondo, the capital of the Valley and a paradise surrounded by beech, oak, and chestnut forests. In 1397, King Carlos III the Noble granted noble status to all its inhabitants, initiating a history of successes and fortunes due to the unique heir system. Many residents moved to Madrid (Villa y Corte), Cádiz, or El Puerto de Santa María, and even to the Indies. They amassed wealth and reinvested in their places of origin. The imposing Baroque manor houses we see today bear witness to the fortunes accumulated by these families over the centuries. We’ll stroll through Santiago Street, along the river named after the Valley, admiring majestic houses such as Arozarena, Istekoena, or the current Town Hall, all architectural gems from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Amaiur Maia, Bastion against the Annexation of the Old Kingdom of Navarre to the Castilian Crown
Our journey continues to Amaiur Maia, the closest Navarrese town to the French border. We’ll discover a region historically strong, capable of maintaining its independence until 1969, defying the annexation of the old Kingdom of Navarre to the Castilian Crown in 1522. In its main street, a semi-circular arch gate welcomes us, accompanied by unique buildings different from the rest of the area, telling much of its history of bravery.
Basajaun or Basque Yeti
Did you know that the Lord of the Forest, known as Basajaun, lived in these lands? As we explore the path to the Mill of Hell (Infernuko Errota), pay attention; we might run into him! This mythological being is linked to the valley’s legends. In the beginning, they were the first farmers and keepers of secrets. Although some stories describe them as terrifying figures, they were actually friendly protectors. Far from being aggressive, Basajaun took care of sheep herds. According to legend, they alerted shepherds to the presence of wolves or storms. As a reward, Basajaun received a piece of bread they collected while the shepherds slept. In any case, as we explore these forests, let’s be enchanted by their legends. Who knows what encounters the path may hold!
Local Cuisine, Nature, and Tradition
After savoring a typical local meal at the restaurant next to Infernuko Errota, we’ll take a relaxing 20-minute stroll to the beautiful mill, nestled at the foot of a stream and surrounded by lush centuries-old beech forests. In this place, serenity will be our best companion. Before us, only the song of birds and the murmur of the river. What peace!
We’ll continue our journey, delving even deeper into the valley through a spectacular road. We’ll cross hills surrounding beautiful pastures, where ancient farmhouses stand, and perhaps, run into the mysterious Basajaun. Finally, we’ll reach Etxalar, a beautiful village with just 800 inhabitants, located in the region of the five Villas.
This small town stands out for its traditional popular architecture and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, surrounded by a charming garden that houses numerous discoidal
