Welcome to Bilbao, a unique and extraordinary Basque city! Today, we’ll take you on a tour to discover all its hidden treasures, from the charming Old Town to the breathtaking Guggenheim Museum – both representing the past and present of this amazing place. You simply can’t miss a visit to this city – it’s an absolute must-see!
Bilbao is a city of tradition, as well as an iconic symbol of architectural transformation. It’s a true gem, and its river has been the commercial and economic hub of the city for centuries. Our tour will begin with a delightful stroll through the Old Town, locally known as the “7 Streets of Bilbao” – one of the most famous corners of the Basque country.
Discovering Bilbao’s Timeless Treasures
Welcome to a journey through Bilbao’s traditional sites, where we’ll explore the city’s historical and architectural wonders. Our first stop is the Arriaga Theater – a grandiose building that dates back to 1890 and draws inspiration from the opulent Paris Opera House. Its beauty will leave you awestruck.
We’ll then make our way to the historic San Nicolas de Bari Church, whose Baroque façade, crowned by two towers and a coat of arms, is a stunning example of the city’s religious heritage.
As we stroll through the winding streets of the Old Town, we’ll visit the picturesque New Square and the charming Unamuno Square, all while basking in the beauty of the magnificent Santiago Cathedral. Its Gothic style, adorned with fifteen chapels, invites quiet contemplation and reflection.
Our journey will then lead us to the iconic Ribera Market, which has reimagined the traditional concept of a marketplace. With its myriad of restaurants, bars, and gastro-bars, this foodie paradise is the perfect place to indulge in the Basque region’s culinary delights.
Our final stop will be the San Anton Bridge, a historic emblem of Bilbao that has endured the test of time. Despite being destroyed during the Francoist regime, it has been lovingly restored and still stands as a testament to the city’s resilience. As we gaze upon its ancient walls, we’ll be transported back in time, feeling the echoes of Bilbao’s rich history reverberating through the present day.
Bilbao’s Modern Marvels
Now, let’s venture towards Bilbao’s modern area, crossing the Arenal Bridge and strolling down the most important street in this zone – the Gran Via Don Diego Lopez de Haro – which was constructed in the mid-19th century. As we walk, we’ll admire magnificent buildings that were once home to the city’s major financial institutions in the late 1800s.
Our journey will lead us to the stunning Plaza Moyua, where we’ll marvel at several historic buildings before reaching the city’s main attraction – the magnificent Guggenheim Museum, a symbol of the new Bilbao.
Before entering, we’ll share fascinating trivia about the museum’s exterior and the area’s redevelopment over the past 25 years. This spectacular structure, crafted from titanium, glass, and limestone, was designed by Frank Gehry and inaugurated in 1997, ushering in a new era of architectural innovation in the city.
Once inside, we’ll use an audioguide (provided by the museum), or if you prefer, we can arrange a private guided tour. (have to be booked in advance)
With so many options to choose from, the choice is yours! Get ready to be awed by the museum’s breathtaking exhibits and contemporary art, an unforgettable experience that truly captures the spirit of Bilbao’s modern transformation.
