Welcome to our specially designed tour of San Sebastian! We want you to experience this beautiful city in every way possible – from its rich history, culture, and gastronomy to its most iconic landmarks. Known as the Bella Easo, San Sebastian was a favorite destination of the Spanish monarchy in the mid-19th century. Are you ready to embark on the journey we’ve prepared for you?
First, we’ll head to Monte Igueldo, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the city, the bay of La Concha, the surrounding mountains, and the coastline. Next, we’ll visit the Peine del Viento, one of the most emblematic works of artist Eduardo Chillida, which fuses the concepts of sea and land. It’s truly a sight to behold as the power of the Cantabrian Sea crashes against the three steel pieces.
Our next stop is the marvelous Miramar Palace, built in 1893 by order of the Spanish Royal Family and once a residence of Queen Maria Cristina during her stays in the city. We’ll take a car to the Alderdi Eder gardens area (“beautiful place” in Basque) and see the Town Hall (a historical
monument that originally served as the Great Casino). Here, we’ll begin a walking tour of the charming Port area with its picturesque txalupas (small boats) and the wonderful Old Town of the city.
We’ll stroll down the famous 31 de Agosto street, which has a unique history. It’s named after August 31st, a special date for San Sebastian, as it was the only street that survived the fire that ravaged the entire city in 1813 during the Anglo-Portuguese occupation.
Next, we’ll visit the Church of Nuestra Señora del Coro, a representative example of Baroque architecture that has captivated visitors for generations. It’s a truly sublime sight. We’ll also see the Plaza de la Constitución and the Church of San Vicente (considered the oldest temple in the city), where we’ll enjoy the tranquility and serenity it exudes.
We’ll also enjoy the beautiful gardens of Plaza de Guipúzcoa (where romance is in the air!) – the first public park built in San Sebastian. We’ll pass by Plaza Oquendo and arrive at the Maria Cristina Hotel, a Belle Époque-style hotel where actresses and actors stay during the International Film Festival of San Sebastian. Did you know that Coco Chanel slept here? And that Mata Hari stayed at the Hotel Londres?
Another emblematic building we’ll visit is the Victoria Theater. Steeped in history, this theater has witnessed many of the city’s main cultural events. From here, we’ll head to Zurriola Beach, where we’ll find the Kursaal Congress Palats and Auditorium – a stunning, avant-garde architectural masterpiece by Rafael Moneo located right on the seafront. The Kursaal has become the epicenter of cultural activity in San Sebastian, current venue of the International Film Festival.
And what better way to end the tour than with a fantastic wine tasting on foot? Not just any wine tasting – an expert sommelier will greet us and present five different wines (you can choose from national, French, or Italian varieties) that pair wonderfully with Basque pate, gourmet cheese, and mussels. Let’s savor every moment!
