San Sebastián: History, Beauty, and Flavors
San Sebastián is a city that enchants with its elegance, history, and above all, its gastronomy. Known as “Bella Easo”, this jewel of the Cantabrian coast has been a retreat for Spanish royalty and international aristocracy since the 19th century, making it a prestigious cultural and social hub.
Our journey begins at Miramar Palace, an elegant English-style residence that once served as the summer home of Queen María Cristina. From its gardens, we will enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of the city, with La Concha Bay and Santa Clara Island forming a picture-perfect landscape.
We’ll then visit one of San Sebastián’s most iconic landmarks: the Peine del Viento (Comb of the Wind), a masterpiece by Eduardo Chillida. Here, imposing steel sculptures seem to engage in a dialogue with the sea and wind, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle.
Next, we’ll ascend to Mount Igueldo, where one of the most stunning panoramas of the Guipuzcoan coastline awaits us. From its summit, we’ll take in the infinite blue of the Cantabrian Sea, the city’s elegant silhouette, and the majestic beauty of La Concha Bay in all its splendor.
A Walk Through the History and Architecture of San Sebastián
Back in the city center, we’ll immerse ourselves in the charm of the Old Town, where history and modernity blend seamlessly. We’ll stroll along the historic 31 de Agosto Street, the only one that survived the great fire of 1813, and visit some of the city’s most significant landmarks, including San Vicente Church, the oldest religious building in San Sebastián, and the magnificent Basilica of Saint Mary of the Chorus, with its striking baroque façade.
We’ll continue to the lively Constitution Square, the heart of local life, before making our way through the elegant Plaza de Guipúzcoa and Plaza Oquendo, until we reach the iconic Hotel María Cristina. Inaugurated in 1912, this luxury hotel was a symbol of the Belle Époque and remains the preferred stay for international film stars attending the prestigious San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Nicknamed “Petit Paris”, San Sebastián reflects French influence in its architecture and urban planning, a legacy that can be seen throughout the city. A prime example is the majestic Victoria Eugenia Theater, a venue for countless cultural events and the main stage of the Film Festival until 1999.
To conclude our tour, we’ll cross the Urumea River via the Zurriola Bridge, stepping into the vibrant Grosneighborhood, where we’ll find the avant-garde Kursaal Palace. Designed by Rafael Moneo, this bold structure of two glass cubes is now the main venue for the San Sebastián Film Festival and a landmark of contemporary architecture. It stands beside Zurriola Beach, a lively meeting point for surfers and young travelers.
A Feast of Flavors: The Pintxo Experience
If there’s one thing that defines San Sebastián, it’s its extraordinary gastronomy. We’ll dive into the world of pintxos, exploring the most iconic bars in the Old Town and savoring these small culinary masterpieces that represent the essence of Basque cuisine.
Each pintxo is a bite-sized creation of history and innovation, meticulously prepared by chefs who have mastered their craft in San Sebastián’s top culinary schools. We’ll taste the legendary Gilda, the very first pintxo ever created, with its irresistible combination of anchovy, chili pepper, and olive, as well as a selection of five exquisite pintxos, each one offering a unique explosion of flavors.
San Sebastián is a feast for the senses, a place where beauty, history, and gastronomy come together to create unforgettable moments. Are you ready to experience it?
