The sea in the Basques’ heart
Did you know that it only takes a short 10-minute drive from San Sebastian to reach the charming Basque fishing village of Orio? This village is renowned for its love of rowing, which is deeply ingrained in its culture and symbolizes its close relationship with the sea.
Not only is Orio a well-known stage on the Northern Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, but it also boasts a stunning historic center that sits atop a hill at the mouth of the river Oria. This area features some impressive Renaissance and Baroque houses, along with the magnificent Church of San Nicolás.
After crossing the river, we’ll make our way towards the vineyard region. Once we’ve climbed the gentle hill, prepare to be amazed by the breathtaking views of the sea and the picturesque Guipuzcoan coast. This is an experience you won’t want to miss out on!
Emblem of the coast of Guipúzcoa
We will walk towards the old Mollarri loading bay and in the distance you will be able to make out the mountain that is popularly known as the Ratón de Guetaria (Mouse of Guetaria, emblem of the coast of Gipúzcoa!). Its silhouette resembles that of a rodent, you can guess which one, can’t you? The Ratón de Guetaria is how Mount San Antón is popularly known. A nickname that responds to the figure that this mountain draws over the sea (you guessed it, a mouse!). For the Basques, to talk about Guetaria is to talk about its Mouse, unparalleled views.
World-famous waves
The impressive beach of Zarauz, a paradise for surf lovers, will take your breath away. This beach (the longest in Guipúzcoa) is the most desirable by surfers because of its world-famous waves. Did you know that Queen Isabella II of Spain used to spend her summer holidays in this coastal area?
We will then take a path that will lead us to the Hermitage of Santa Bárbara, from where you will have incredible views of Zarauz and its beautiful beach. You will be surrounded by vineyards of the famous Basque txakoli wine and you will begin to make out the beautiful village of Guetaria. This town is famous for its coal grilled fish.
