Whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan or not, you’ll be captivated by this stunning and unique landscape. And if you are a fan, get ready to relive the drama of the Seven Kingdoms by visiting the iconic filming locations of the show’s seventh season. Trust us, this route is full of character and charm that will leave a lasting impression on you.
Scenes from Game of Thrones
Let’s head to Itzurun Beach (in Zumaia), the setting chosen to film Daenerys Targaryen’s landing when she returns home. It’s a hidden gem of the Basque coast that only locals knew about before it became internationally famous.
You’ll have an exciting stroll along the beach and cliffs, enjoying the spectacular views that made this location perfect for the show.
The Best Left Wave in Europe
Our next destination is Mundaka, a beautiful town located on the left bank of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. This Basque gem is a mecca for surfers as it boasts the best left wave in Europe. Can you imagine it reaching heights of up to 4 meters and stretching 400 meters long? It’s truly spectacular.
We’ll visit the Santa Catalina Chapel and the beautiful harbor area which offers stunning views of the Reserve, Laga Beach, and the Ogoño cliffs.
Rocadragón, a breathtaking landscape
Our next stop is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a tiny islet connected to the mainland by a picturesque man-made bridge. It’s probably the most famous Basque location from Game of Thrones (known as Dragonstone to fans of the show). This natural setting, consisting of an islet, a hermitage, and the famous 241 steps, is where the scene was filmed in which Daenerys Targaryen climbs the stairs and reaches her castle (digitally created). Can you imagine crossing the bridge and climbing the stairs to enjoy the view from above? It’s an experience you can’t miss. And don’t forget to ring the hermitage bell three times because they say it brings good luck!
The beauty of its cliffs, its incredible tunnels, and beaches eroded by the force of the Cantabrian Sea is truly a sight to behold! We’ll also share with you various anecdotes, legends, and stories about
this place.
