We’ll kick off our picturesque route by heading towards the stunning Valle de Regil, driving along a winding road that takes us through charming towns like Albiztur until we reach the top of Iturburu. From here, you can feast your eyes on the spectacular views of the Hernio mountain range and the valley below.
With the impressive silhouette of Hernio as a backdrop, the Valle de Regil is a succession of rolling hills, quaint white farmhouses, grazing sheep, and lush pastures. We’ll take a leisurely stroll through the area to fully appreciate the stunning views – they’re so relaxing and refreshing, just what you need to recharge your batteries!
Places with history
Next, we’ll visit the Loyola Sanctuary (you’ll be impressed by its majestic dome!), built between the 17th and 18th centuries. You’ll be surprised to find it in the middle of the Urola Valley, surrounded by mountains and in an idyllic setting. Talking about this sanctuary means talking about one of the most notable Basque figures in our history: Iñigo de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus and later adopted the name Ignacio. You’ll be able to visit his birthplace.
Our route will take us to the coast. We’ll head to Itzurun Beach (Zumaia) and take a stroll through this iconic place where its cliffs drop vertically into the sea. Part of one of the episodes of Game of Thrones was filmed here (when Daenerys arrives by boat at her home and walks along Itzuru Beach).
Guetaria, birthplace of illustrious figures
Let’s not end our tour without visiting Guetaria, the town that reminds us of the great feat of Juan Sebastián Elcano. This illustrious Basque navigator was the first to sail around the world in the early 16th century. In this charming coastal town of Guipúzcoa, every four years for the past century, they commemorate Elcano’s heroic feat with a reenactment of his arrival.
We’ll stroll through the streets of Guetaria and discover the birthplace of another illustrious Basque personality: the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Christian Dior once said he was “everyone’s master,” and Givenchy referred to him as the “architect of high fashion.” A true source of pride for the Basque people!
Guetaria’s grilled fish is a hallmark of the town. You can’t leave without savoring some spectacular, fresh fish while enjoying the views of the sea and its beautiful port. Enjoy!
