Get ready to discover a piece of Earth’s evolution on the Basque Coast with our amazing tour of three dreamy towns: Zarautz, Guetaria, and Zumaia, where breathtaking landscapes will leave you speechless.
Our first stop is Zarautz, a coastal fishing village that once attracted Spanish royalty for summer vacations. Did you know that Queen Isabel II of Spain used to spend long summers here? This village is one of the most beautiful areas of the Guipúzcoa coast and a top destination for surfers because of its magnificent beach for catching some waves. You’ll see why it’s a perfect spot!
Guetaria, the Birthplace of Celebrated Personalities
We’ll then take a winding coastal road to Guetaria, the birthplace of the intrepid sailor Juan Sebastián Elcano (yes, the one who led the expedition that circumnavigated the world!) and the celebrated fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.
We’ll visit a local producer of the famous Basque wine, txakolí. You’re going to love the guided tour, which includes a tasting of local products. Savor and enjoy!
We’ll take a pleasant stroll through the town’s narrow streets, where you’ll discover the great treasures hidden within: the Gothic church of San Salvador that watches over the narrow streets leading to the port and some of the Gothic palatial houses from the 15th century.
And, of course, we can’t leave Guetaria without visiting a local grill house, one of the gastronomic temples of the Basque Country, where you can savor a spectacular charcoal-grilled fish. A visual, aromatic, and gustatory delight that you won’t forget!
Zumaia and its breathtaking cliffs
After lunch, we’ll head over to Zumaia. Fun fact: if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you may recognize some of the corners here as they’ve filmed a few scenes in the area. And of course, we’ll wrap up our tour with a stunning and beautiful landscape that has a rich history: the Flysch (a German word that means flow or slide).
It’s a landscape of rock layers, like a layered cake dipped in the sea, that formed under the sea due to sediment accumulation over millions of years. All these sediments ended up folding, fracturing, and rising to create these unique folds and elevations that gave birth to the Pyrenees. The sheer verticality of the cliffs will leave you in awe!
