Don’t miss this tour of a natural and mystical paradise: the Urkiola mountains. In this place (a landscape of unparalleled beauty), you will find centuries-old beech forests, vertical limestone walls, and the typical Basque rural dwellings called “caseríos” (it took us Basques 1,400 years to invent them) intermingled with the lush nature. You can’t miss it!
The secrets of Basque cheeses
What better way to start than by enjoying a visit to a typical Basque farm where you will learn how to make cheese? You will feel the incredible experience of contact with the sheep, your hosts will explain how Idiazábal Basque cheese is made and, of course, you will taste several delicious kinds of cheese (I bet you will like them all).
Mystery and magic
After we visit the farm, we will go to the Urkiola Sanctuary and, of course, be amazed by the breathtaking views of the valleys and mountains from the Mirador de las 3 cruces. Breathe, feel, enjoy…
Our next stop will be the Necropolis of Argiñeta, where you will feel how mystery and magic intermingle. This emblematic site is a cultural heritage site and one of the most important funerary monuments in the Basque Country. Here you will find sarcophagi with the oldest Christian inscriptions in the area. The beauty of the place will strike you because it is in an enclave surrounded by beech and oak trees.
Elorrio, another magical spot
This stately town hides a spectacular historic quarter (it was declared a Monumental Site in 1964) and is one of the most important and impressive in the Basque Country. Strolling through its streets is a delight, full of emblazoned palace houses and manor houses of stone and ashlar masonry carved in the XVII and XVIII centuries.
We will finish our monumental tour by visiting the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (its bell tower is a replica of the Giralda in Seville) and the Portal del Campo.
