Get ready for a gastronomic adventure that will transport you to the heart of Basque country! You simply cannot leave this land of culinary treasures without first embarking on a guided tour that will unveil the secrets behind our beloved “Idiazábal Cheese” and the age-old process of crafting “Txakoli”, a refreshing white wine that is synonymous with Basque culture. As we journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Zarautz and Guetaria, two coastal gems nestled on the Cantabrian Sea, we’ll feast on a scrumptious meal at a traditional grill restaurant that will leave you in gastronomic bliss.
Our journey kicks off with a visit to a local “Idiazábal Cheese” producer, where you’ll be introduced to the craft of cheese-making. This cheese, made from the prized “Latxa” breed of sheep, is renowned for its maximum quality and origin denomination. And did we mention the annual cheese competitions that showcase the crème de la crème of our artisanal cheeses? It’s a cheese-lover’s dream come true!
You’ll get to witness adorable sheep frolicking about, learn the intricacies of crafting our beloved cheese, and indulge in a variety of locally produced treats, including different versions of the cheese and luscious “Cuajada”. Prepare to savor the unique flavors of Basque cuisine and relish in the joy of discovering culinary treasures.
Zarautz and Guetaria, towns steeped in history
Next, we’ll head to the beautiful Guipuzcoan coast and visit Guetaria, the birthplace of two legendary Basque figures: Juan Sebastián Elcano, the intrepid sailor who captained the ship that completed the first circumnavigation of the world, and Cristóbal Balenciaga, the iconic fashion designer who embodied elegance on a global scale.
But Guetaria is also famous worldwide for its mouth-watering grilled meats and, of course, for the renowned “Txakoli Wine”. You’ll get an insider’s look into the process of crafting this fresh and light white wine, which is considered the pride of Basque country. Made from local grapes, this unique wine has been produced since the Middle Ages and owes its singular flavor to the proximity of the vineyards to the sea. It is crafted from two varieties of local grapes: Hondarrabi Zuri (white grape) and Hondarrabi Beltz (black grape). Did you know that the US is the primary importer of this delicious wine?
Prepare to be transported to a world of unparalleled flavors and aromas, and to discover the secrets of one of the Basque Country’s most cherished culinary traditions. Guetaria is a feast for the senses, and our journey will take you on a sensory adventure you’ll never forget.
A feast for the palate
We’ll take you to a typical Basque grill restaurant where you’ll enjoy a spectacular grilled fish dish cooked over charcoal. It’s a sensory feast that is not only visually stunning but also aromatic and flavorful. As you wander the charming streets of Guetaria, the smell of smoky charcoal fills the air, a testament to the town’s culinary heritage.
Basque cuisine is deeply ingrained in the region’s popular culture and is known for its high-quality ingredients and the contrast between the flavors of the sea and the mountains.
After our meal (and before returning to San Sebastian), we’ll take you to the town of Zarautz. The beautiful coastal road that connects Guetaria and Zarautz offers breathtaking views of the sea and coastline. Zarautz is a famous Basque town, known for its beautiful beach and as a popular destination for surfers from around the world, drawn by the incredible waves and stunning scenery.
Breathe in the fresh sea air, take in the stunning views, and feel the energy surge through your veins as you immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of Basque country. It’s a culinary and cultural journey that you won’t soon forget.
